What is the Diaconate?
From the earliest days of the New Testament Church, deacons and deaconesses have attended to the temporal needs of the church. Overseeing the extensive mercy ministry, the diaconate serves church members and our neighbors with provision, volunteers and other forms of assistance.
In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. —1 Timothy 3:8-13
More specifically, from the Book of Church Order of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), our denomination:
They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. The office of deacon is set forth in the Scriptures as ordinary and perpetual in the Church. The office is one of sympathy and service, after the example of the Lord Jesus; it expresses also the communion of saints, especially in their helping one another in time of need. —Chapter 9, Section 2
The Grace Redeemer Church Diaconate extends the Grace and Mercy of Jesus Christ through care and support to the GRC body and surrounding community. The focus is on physical and felt needs to reflect the Mercy Jesus so freely gives us in hopes that it would foster a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The aim is to organize to enable and leverage the GRC body to administer care and support to one another. The Diaconate is also aimed at filling it’s biblical role in administering the non-teaching/spiritual needs of the church.
The Diaconate is not duplicative of Missions. It’s goal is to provide for those in need, inside GRC as well as the surrounding community. To contact the Diaconate, please email email@example.com.
